Internships and First Jobs in Nigeria: A Starting Plan
Turn training and service experience into evidence, then apply through verified employer routes.

# Internships and first jobs in Nigeria: a starting plan
Where to start
An entry-level search is easier when you can show a small piece of finished work. For administration, that could be a clean spreadsheet or an event plan. For design or software, it may be a portfolio project. For customer service, describe a time you handled requests, tracked issues and followed up. Make sure the example is your own and that you can explain your choices.
The official NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development department describes training and mentoring for corps members. Treat skills training as a way to gain evidence, not as an automatic job placement. The federal LEEP Jobs portal can help you discover roles, but check the employer's own notice and eligibility before applying. Some opportunities called “graduate trainee” still require a specific degree, location or completion year.
Build a first-job shortlist
Choose two or three job families where your skills fit. Read ten current employer adverts and note repeated requirements. Update one CV for each family, with internships, NYSC work, volunteering and projects described as concrete tasks. Apply to roles that genuinely match, recording title, employer, official URL, deadline and response. Revisit the list weekly rather than resending the same application to a closed advert.
If you are considering an international internship, read the official programme terms. The UN Careers guidance explains that applications start from a specific opening; a general message to someone claiming to represent the UN is not an application. Before accepting any placement, ask about supervision, duration, location, working hours and expenses in writing.
Do not pay to “secure” an internship. The ILO's fair recruitment principles say recruitment fees should not be charged to jobseekers. Your first role should help you build skills and a credible reference, not create debt.
